Prompt: Write a letter to the man who killed your family.

Dear Mr. Killer,

I’m not sure if you’ll ever read this, as it’s just a stupid school assignment, but know that I know what you did.

I know you planned this for a long time—since you were a kid, even. I know you watched my family for years before you struck. I know you hated my parents more than most people thought you did, and that gave you an opening.

I don’t know everything, though. I don’t know how you did it.

I haven’t decided that yet, and this “letter to my future self” is due at midnight.

Prompt: You have an incredible opportunity, but seizing it means betraying your best friend.

My heart is failing.

It has been for a time. My fingers and toes go numb randomly. I always feel out of breath. I can no longer go on runs or hikes.

I used to go on a lot of hikes with my best friend. I used to do everything with him—we’re completely alike. We even have the same blood type.

That’s why I know he’d understand what I have to do. Obviously, I have to keep him drugged while the black market doctor removes the transplant organ, but he’d understand.

He has a good heart.

Prompt: The authorities have raided your home. What were they looking for?

“Where is the time loop generator?” the officer barks, kicking in my front door.

He storms inside as my dog barks madly, the incandescent lightbulbs flicker, and the floorboards creak with the intrusion.

The officer checks the first bedroom. Then, the second. Then, the bathroom. Then, the garage.

The generator is nowhere to be found, so he runs outside in frustration.

There’s another porch and door in front of him. Forgetting everything he saw inside the house, he runs up and drives his foot through the front door.

“Where is the time loop generator?”

Prompt: Write a story with a genuinely happy ending.

“Send us our money, or we’ll kill the girl,” the kidnapper says through his ski mask.

He sees me through the webcam. If I don’t transfer $1,000,000, he’ll know. Feigning a tremble, I navigate to my bank account and send the money.

A day later, he returns my wife.

“Our—our life savings is gone!” she cries, knowing we’ll likely become homeless.

What she doesn’t know is that the money I sent has digital ink packets attached—if the kidnapper tries to spend it, the malicious code will send all of his money to me and alert the police to his location.

These Poll Numbers Are Out of This World

As our elected leader addresses the alien ship, I stare at the TV.

“Oh, traveler,” our leader says. “What do you wish to tell us first?”

A rumbling, mechanical voice replies, “WE POSSESS THE POWER OF MIND CONTROL. DO AS WE SAY, AND WE WON’T HAVE TO USE IT.”

I gasp as our leader glances down introspectively.

Then, he blurts out, “Convince voters to re-elect me and wipe all memories of this encounter, and I’ll hand over 50,000 humans to experiment on.”

What? I think in horror.

“DONE.”

As a calm washes over me, my admiration for our leader soars.

GoodJourney Airlines

Thank you for choosing GoodJourney Airlines for your flight to Hawaii!

Please check the safety manual in the seat back pocket. In it, you’ll find information on how to die in the event of a crash landing, so you don’t have to starve to death in the ocean.

If you brought a bag on the plane, you’ll have to upgrade to the GimmeMoney Premium ticket or we will have to give your belongings away.

There will be one meal per row. Who gets it is up to you. If you must duel, please put the blood-guards on your seats.

Prompt: You love them more than you thought you could ever love someone.

I just want her to succeed.

I just want her to feel proud of her accomplishments.

That’s why I do what I do, but I make sure my love doesn’t know about it.

She doesn’t know her boss had an accident and broke his hip when she got passed over for a promotion—she just knows she got reconsidered.

She also doesn’t know I held the Powerball Lottery CEO’s children hostage and made him choose her winning number—she just remembers the Greece trip it paid for.

My love deserves the world, and I’ll burn it down if it refuses her.
